LP Gas vs Natural Gas

There are two types of gas fuel available in South Africa – LP Gas (LPG)  and Natural Gas.

LP GAS (LPG)

This is the most commonly used form of gas fuel in both South Africa & in Africa in general. It is supplied in freestanding cylinders of varying sizes however organisations with very high LP Gas consumption store their gas in underground tanks.

Liquefied petroleum gas (also called LPG, GPL, LP Gas, liquid petroleum gas, propane or butane), is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as a fuel for cooking, heating, commercial appliances and vehicles. When specifically used as a vehicle fuel it is often referred to as auto-gas.

The initial cost of buying a gas cylinder will include the cost of the cylinder as well as the gas inside it. When refilling the cylinder, you will only be charged for the gas itself. When using LP Gas you will also need to purchase a Regulator (fits on the gas cylinder & regulates the supply of gas to the appliance) & a hose (carries the gas from the cylinder to the appliance).

It is very important to buy gas cylinders & regulators from reputable companies.

NATURAL GAS

Natural Gas is an environmentally-friendly fossil fuel extracted from decomposed plant and animal matter found in rock, deep in the earth.  Natural Gas is the earth’s naturally produced combustible gas and is an effective and efficient energy resource.

The only Natural Gas in South Africa is currently supplied by Egoli Gas, who reticulate the gas directly to your premises via an established, safe, 1200km gas network in the Johannesburg area only.  The Johannesburg areas tend to be the older suburbs which follow along Oxford Road, including  Greenside & Linden, & reaching as far as Hyde Park.. There is also a Natural Gas supply to Kensington & Observatory.

Advantages of Natural Gas

  • Egoli Gas have been efficiently reticulating gas since 1892 to the domestic, central water, multi-dwellings, hospitality and industrial markets.
  • Natural gas is cost effective, environmentally friendly, instant and safe when used according to specifications.
  •  Egoli Gas does not “run-out”
  •  No bulky bottles and tanks
  •  No delivery problems, no shortages and no discrepancies in quality
  •  No logistic constraints as there are no storage tanks, pick up, ordering or transportation requirements as natural gas are supplied via a gas supply pipe line.
  •  Natural gas is lighter than air so it evaporates safely.
  •  Natural gas is made up of mostly methane, natural gas releases less pollutants into air
  •  Natural gas is extracted from earth and needs less processing
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: when buying your gas appliances be sure to confirm that they are able to operate on Natural Gas. While some of the more upmarket cooking appliances come with the jets required to operate on Natural Gas, most budget cooking appliances do not. Most brands of gas geysers either offer specific geysers for Natural Gas, or are able to fit the required jets.
